Alchemy is a series of speculations on matter, metaphysics, commodification and valuation. Raw metal plates are ground clean on four edges to a precise dimension so that each plate is equal in volume of the standard gold ingot traded on international financial markets.  The plates are then patinaed, reducing the aesthetic value of the different metals to their most elemental state, where only the unique texture, tone and essence of each plate remains.  Each plate is “floated” on a wall-mounted bracket accentuating the ephemerality of each plate’s functional value.  The hard edge of the plates together with the raw materiality of the plate faces calls into question material extraction from the earth.  The price of each plate is set to each material’s market weight in gold, further speculating on the applied value of material and art.
