New construction of a contemporary, luxury, single-family retreat set against a nature preserve in a coastal flood plain; a sustainable home that is both formally iconic and environmentally sensitive. The project sought a conversation with the adjacent park whose dunes are said to “walk”, because strong prevailing winter winds cause them to migrate southeast burying the surrounding landscape.

The custom cast gfrc panel cladding was designed with an algorithm that simulates the fluid movement of sand particles. The resulting patterns were then milled using a CNC router to create casting molds. The molds were then cast with the gfrc and an integral rain-screen clip system. The resulting panels each have a unique, subtly undulating, textured surface that has an intrinsic relationship to the surrounding environment. The armature of the house is visible in places where the panels have “eroded” from or have yet to “walk” over portions of the home closer to the water.
