Architect: Lacuna Architecture Atelier – Gregory Thomas, Director
Program: 1500 sf 2 bedroom, 2.5 bath single-family residence and pool

The renovation and addition of an existing 1950’s Cape Cod cottage transformed a tangle of small rooms into a light-filled, contemporary cabin with pool and wooded pond views.

Alaskan Yellow Cedar shingle siding draws on the material vernacular of the area and softens the discrete geometry of the architecture. The Alaskan Yellow Cedar shiplap siding of the box dormers, and square windows create a contemporary core that intersects with the vernacular structure.

The architectural geometries offer a contemporary look back to regional architectural types, maintaining a modesty of form and detail while setting the stage for future additions to the home and property

Built-in elements, like the drop leaf table/island cap unite functional, space-saving, modern design with a nod to heritage construction methods.

“Gregory was more than an architect—he was a true partner throughout the renovation and addition to our home.”

The use of horizontal wood throughout the interiors visually expands the modest scale of the home and distinguishes the core geometry from its outer shell.

This project changed from a tear-down and rebuild to a remodel, due to a regulatory moratorium on new construction, which caused the project vision and execution to evolve – reconfiguring the existing structure into a few elegant, finely detailed open spaces for a contemporary family.

The warmth of the wood surfaces is contrasted by back painted glass surfaces which further expand the visual sense of space.  Wrought black hardware, quartz surfaces and mosaic tile complete the simple, elegant and utilitarian material palate.
